A cop assigned to a unit in Trelawny is among two men arrested after police allegedly found illegal firearms, including a high powered M16 rifle, during an operation in Portmore, St Catherine, on Monday night.

Police reports say about 11:15 p.m., a team on patrol spotted a grey Toyota Probox overtaking a line of traffic along Port Henderson Road. The vehicle was intercepted and the two occupants were questioned.

Lawmen then searched the vehicle and allegedly discovered a Taurus pistol along with 65 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a magazine.

The men and the motorcar were taken to the Greater Portmore Police Station, where during further searches, investigators reportedly uncovered an M16 rifle inside the vehicle.

Both men are expected to face charges of possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Scenes of Crime personnel have since examined the vehicle and processed it for additional evidence as investigations continue.

The identities of the accused are being withheld pending formal charges.
